10 Hot Hands Free Devices to Comply With New Hands Free Cell Phone Laws

Handsfree5 From practical to stylish, high tech companies worldwide are developing and marketing new hands-free devices to help you comply with the new hands-free cell phone laws in various states in the union.  Being an attorney who represents injured people, I'm thrilled to see the proliferation of these devices.  I can't tell you how many clients will come to me after a devastating car accident and say "She/he was on the cell phone and didn't see me."  It reminds me of a case that I had several years ago where my client was rear-ended by a guy who was watching a DVD while driving in the fast lane of the 101!

I found a great article on Channel Web entitled 10 Hot Hands-Free Devices for Cell Phone Law Compliance.  They list the following devices (click on each one for detailed information or click here to view individual photos of these devices!):

  1. Plantronics Voyager 520, around $40
  2. Sennheiser VMX 120, around $189
  3. Jabra JX 10 Series, around $70
  4. Ford Sync, built into various Ford products
  5. Aliph's New Jawbone, around $100
  6. Parrott Mini-Kit, $50-80
  7. Magellan Maestro 3140, around $140-400 (GPS with Bluetooth!)
  8. Motorola T605, around $150 (music and Bluetooth)
  9. Anycom Solar Bluetooth Kit, around $80 (yep, it's solar powered)
  10. BlueAnt Supertooth Light, around $90

Shocking_accident_list_view You know how I'm always ranting and raving about driving hands-free.  Heck, I don't expect you to not talk while driving (that'd be saying "do as I say, not as I do") but, please, go hands-free and keep both hands on the steering wheel.  Please don't let this happen to you or a loved one.

Smart Car: How Safe Is It? Miles Per Gallon?

Smartrear Have you been noticing the proliferation of the Daimler AG's Smart Car recently?  Sure, it gets great mileage, looks pretty cute and zips right along.  But its recent emergence on the scene got me to wondering just how safe this little tiny car would be in a big crash.  According to greencar.com, "The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently crash tested the 2008 smart fortwo and found it performed so well it earned the Institute’s best ratings for front and side crash protection. Plus, its rear crash worthiness was rated as “acceptable,” the Institute’s second-highest rating."  Read the complete IIHS report here.

Most interesting to me is the Smart Car Crash Video below.  Crashing into a solid concrete barrier at 70 mph does not completely destroy the car (although it would likely completely destroy its occupants so DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!).  Watch the chilling yet informative video below:"

And what kind of mileage does the Smart Car get?  According to The Daily Green.com, it gets 33 city and 41 highway.  Did you know that there's also a waiting list of 45,000?  When completely tricked out, this car still runs a little under $20,000 (and the base model starts at around $12,000).

But, folks, I represent people who are injured -- and oftentimes injured in car accidents.  My primary focus is in keeping my clients safe so I'm hesitant to support this car because, in spite of its high ratings, it's still a dinky little car and, at least in Los Angeles, we have a plethora of gigantic cars on the road.  I don't want to get a phone call from you or, worse, a loved one telling me that you've been involved in a Smart Car crash. To me the car is tantamount to a motorcycle with a steel shell.

Smartcrashaction    Is 33/41 mpg worth the risk? Maybe not.

Former NY Judge Jeanine Pirro, Doctored Police Report, $200K Settlement

My favorite blogging New York Personal Injury Attorney, Eric Turkewitz, relates a great story of corruption involving a former judge/district attorney and her formerly disbarred high-powered real estate attorney husband.  Here's what Turkewitz tells us:

Al Pirro Jr. last week quietly settled a lawsuit for $200,000 that involved Jeanine Pirro and her failed political campaign for Attorney General. Jeanine -- also a former judge, District Attorney, failed Senate candidate against Hillary Clinton and now a talk show host -- was in the backseat of her husband's SUV on October 18, 2006 when it sideswiped a motorcyclist as they approached a light. The collision knocked him down, broke his ankle and sent him skidding along the pavement. The SUV was driven by a campaign staffer just weeks before the election.

He goes on to say: "While the officer on the scene first reported a collision between Pirro's SUV and Scott Lieberman riding his Harley, that report was subsequently deep-sixed after the officer saw Jeanine Pirro in the back and saw that the SUV was owned by her husband. The second accident report didn't have the Pirro vehicle in the accident."  Read the rest of this outrageous story here.

This tale of corruption is outrageous and, I hate to admit it, a bit tantalizing at the same time.  Oh, how the mighty don't ever seem to fall!

Aged Tires: A Driving Hazard

Tiretreadwarning_still_frame ABC News investigated the dangers of expired tires. A tire failure can result when the tread peels off of a tire. Tires can sit on the retailer’s shelf for years and still be sold as new. Research shows that even if a tire has never been driven a mile, they begin to dry out while they sit on the shelf. After 6 years of age, they can become dangerous.

When a car is traveling at highway speed and the tread comes off, the car violently swerves and weaves.

The tires may have plenty of tread depth but, if the tire is old, its dried out condition may be a hidden danger.

ABC has done an extensive undercover investigation. Watch the video here.

July 4, 1776 Independence Day

Hurrah_for_the_usaFireworks, barbecues, beach, friends and family gathering to celebrate Independence Day: The Fourth of July!!!

Here's to a Happy, Healthy and Safe 4th of July!

I'd like to share some 4th of July tidbits with you:

From History.com:

Independence Day in the U.S., is an annual holiday commemorating the formal adoption by the Continental Congress of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia. Although the signing of the Declaration was not completed until August, the Fourth of July holiday has been accepted as the official anniversary of U.S. independence and is celebrated in all states and territories of the U.S.

The holiday was first observed in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776, at which time the Declaration of Independence was read aloud, city bells rang, and bands played. It was not declared a legal holiday, however, until 1941. The Fourth is traditionally celebrated publicly with parades and pageants, patriotic speeches, and organized firing of guns and cannons and displays of fireworks; early in the 20th century public concern for a "safe and sane" holiday resulted in restrictions on general use of fireworks. Family picnics and outings are a feature of private Fourth of July celebrations.

Flying Trapeze - Circus Festival of Monte Carlo

The most amazing trapeze act that I have ever seen.  It's not particularly relevant to personal injury law, but it is so exquisite that I had to share it with you.

Chinese acrobats engaging in such a beautiful act.  It's awe-inspiring.  Please watch the whole video.

Senior Citizen Driving: Warning Signs and Helping an Unsafe Driver to Stop Driving

Senior_driverI found an interesting article on the Helpguide.org website entitled Senior Citizen Driving: Warning Signs and Helping an Unsafe Driver to Stop Driving.  The article details a great many issues of importance to senior drivers and those who love them:

  • Risk Factors of Aging That Can Affect Driving Ability
  • Warning Signs of Unsafe Driving
  • Steps to Take if You're Concerned About the Safety of a Senior Driver
  • Talking to a Senior Driver Who Should Stop Driving
  • When a Senior Driver Refuses to Give up the Keys
  • Helping a Senior Adjust to Life Without Driving
  • References and Resources for Helping an Unsafe Senior to Stop Driving

In addition to an extensive discussion and analysis on the subject of seniors on the road, there is a link to an article by Rod Clark entitled Making the "Key" Decision: When Should an Older Adult Surrender Their Keys? (courtesy of Agenet.com) which includes an actual checklist with questions that answer the question "Can I Still Drive Safely in Spite of My Age?"

Here are but just a few of the relevant links provided in this article:

Again, I encourage you to read the entire article by clicking here.
